The importance of self-sustainability and battling overconsumption has never been more evident.

The world is changing rapidly around us, and with that, we must adapt. It makes my eye twitch every time someone says they can’t garden because they live in an apartment.

The last time I checked, gardening only took some seeds, soil, and water! Online trends have normalized these extravagant illusions that make us feel like if we can’t buy or do what we see online, then we will never measure up.

Overconsumption has made people lose their grip on their natural creativity and problem-solving skills. I want to prove it’s not as hard as it seems.

I’m not a master gardener or someone rich. I’m just a gardening enthusiast who is sick of being advertised to and done with overconsumption. Hopefully, this will inspire you to find unique or cheap finds in your local area!

Thrifting is underrated. You can find the most unique items that will LAST and save you money at the same time. And they make you look authentic because you took the time to curate a space.

Here are some thrifting ideas for your balcony, deck, or patio garden

1. Ladder

Okay technically I didn’t buy this at a thrift store but I had to put it on the list. This ladder is my favorite thrift item because it was left by a contractor and was 100% free. Ladders are super ideal for vertical gardening. Not only do they add visual interest to a balcony but it helps save space at the same time!

2. Outdoor Plant Holder

This iron-wrought plant stand was snagged from Goodwill for $15. Vintage, cute, and it holds up to 4 plants! Adding items made from different or uncommon materials can help add texture and interest to a space!

3. Unique Plates/Saucers

I’m always on the lookout for unique plates that are a bit deeper, similar to a mini reservoir. This plate with the giraffe face was $3. Unique plates like these are perfect plant saucers for catching excess water and honestly, I just think they look better than the plastic ones you typically find at the store.

4. Storage Bins

After seeing the composting trend online, I wanted to try it but I was not willing to spend $100 for a tumbler! Instead, I bought a $5 plastic storage bin and set it off to the side of my back patio. Been composting ever since! Best investment ever, and they come in different sizes!

5. Milk Crates (Upcycled Containers)

These black milk crates were $2 each at Goodwill. I grabbed these to grow herbs in, but then I had a few potatoes sprouting in my pantry, so I’m trying those instead since it’s cooler out! First-time experiment, so I’ll make an update later. But these crates can come in handy as upcycled containers. And you might even be able to get these for free at the grocery store!

6. Outdoor Tables

This small folded outdoor table was $8. It’s simple, super cute, and can be used for plants, a side table, or a picnic table with two chairs! I love the color and it was held up very well against the Florida elements.

7. Unique Pots and Stands

Thrift stores have THE best unique garden pots! Sometimes they can be ridiculously expensive if they are larger pots or ceramic, but if you look hard enough, you can find some unique finds at a decent price. These pots were less than $10 each!

8. Outdoor Seating

Just when I gave up looking for patio furniture, I found this set of aluminum patio seats for only $12 apiece. Two chairs are not showing, but the total was $60. For the amount of rain, heat, and elements we experience in Florida, I considered these a steal. Add cushions and I’ll have a new chill spot on my patio this Spring.

9. Trellis

These vintage trellises were $8 each. These are perfect for growing climbing vegetables or vertical gardening in smaller spaces!

Shopping in thrift stores can take a little more time but it’s truly worth it to find items that speak to your soul over time. As you can see, my garden balcony space is still under construction but I hope to curate enough plants and flowers to make my balcony my outdoor workspace for Spring next year!
