Did you know that common houseplants can be grown in water?

That’s right! With many of your favorites, you can skip the mess of soil and grow in just a container and water.

And you don’t even need fertilizer!

From propagation cuttings to modern decor, hydroponics is the key to a clean aesthetic in your home.

In this post, I’ll share the top plants you should consider growing in water.

These plants are not only perfect for indoor decor but are also ideal for beginners who are forgetful waterers.

The Science and Facts

How is it that roots can survive in a full pot of water but will drown in soil if you accidentally overwater the plant?

I know I’ve wondered this. I’ve always been a little confused about the science behind hydroponics. I finally know why!

The answer is the amount of oxygen.

Waterlogged soil (or overwatered) soil provides the perfect environment for bacteria to grow.

Bacteria is beneficial to the plant, but if there’s an overgrowth, the roots are unable to absorb oxygen from the soil, leading to root rot.

Whereas when plants grow in water, there is few bacteria present and oxygen is easily absorbed by the roots!

Now of course, stagnant water over time can also lead to an increase of bacteria, but root rot is far less likely to happen in pure water.

Still not convinced? Here are a few other benefits of hydroponics to consider:

  • Reduced Water Use: This is an eco-friendly method that decreases water run-off and surface evaporation from plants.
  • Ideal for Small Spaces: Plants that grow in soilless environments mean you can indulge in your love of plants without making a huge mess.
  • Low-Maintenance: Growing in water is an amazing and low-maintenance way to introduce gardening to beginners or kids.

According to science, plants that grow in water grow bigger and faster than plants and/or produce grown in pots!
